GIMP 3.2 – Major Upgrade, SVG, New Non Destructive Layers

On Saturday, 3/14/2026 the GIMP project released a version, GIMP 3.2, as a major new upgrade to the open-source project for Linux, macOS and Windows.

After a year of work since the first version of GIMP 3.0, we’re proud to release GIMP 3.2! In addition to our main roadmap items of “non-destructive layers”, this release is packed with all sorts of new features, UX/UI refinements, and stability improvements.

This new version has many highlights, such as new non-destructive layers.

You can now use Link Layers to incorporate external image as part of your compositions, easily scaling, rotating, and transforming them without losing quality or sharpness. The link layer’s content is updated when the source file is modified The Path tool can now create Vector Layers, which lets you draw shapes with adjustable fill and stroke settings.

Also included is a new “Overwrite” paint mode that allows you to draw over existing colors without blending their transparencies. Another notable inclusion is that the on-canvas text editor has had a few improvements as well; you can now move the text editor across the canvas and use shortcuts.

New file formats are also available, such as the SVG export option and expanded vector options for PDF exports. JPEG 2000 and Photoshop PSB support were also added.

Note: This is the final 32-bit Windows release for GIMP.

Overall, GIMP 3.2 represents a significant step toward the kind of professional, non-destructive workflow that users have long been asking for—narrowing the gap with tools like Photoshop while staying fully open source.
